Hold Your Breath!!

Now that the winter season, or what passes for winter here in Paradise, is upon us, I thought I would pass on to you some observations concerning the breathing patterns of your Friends.

Kitty Friends:

Any interference with breathing in or breathing out in your Kitty Friend indicates that there is trouble. 90% of the respiratory problems in Kitty Friends are obstructive.  There is difficulty breathing in or out because something is interfering with the normal flow of air. Most of the time , this obstruction is fluid of some kind. The most common fluid is mucous. The Fall flu season does not spare our Kitty Friends. They can develop an upper respiratory infection without going outside or being directly exposed to other Kitty Friends. Of course, if they are routinely vaccinated for the common upper respiratory viruses, they will have both direct and indirect immunity to most viruses. One of the weakest systems in our Kitty Friends is their respiratory system.  Sneezing is not normal for them . Nor does sneezing indicate allergies. Excessive grooming is the most common symptom of allergies. I have seen several Kitty Friends from isolated homes who do not go outside , that have developed severe upper respiratory problems. Fortunately, their Village Mom and Dads brought them to me promptly. The other 10% of breathing problems in Kitty Friends are due to heart and lung problems. There is a Feline Asthma condition. Our Kitty Friends do not develop a true asthma or emphysema. However, the terms are most familiar to people so we use them. These Kitty Friends are usually at least six years old. They do not have fluid in their chests or runny noses. They just breathe hard. The small percentage of our Kitty Friends over 12 years of age develop heart conditions associated with hyperthyroidism . This enlarged heart does make it harder to breathe. However, this is usually not noticeable. An annual thyroid test and chest X-ray can identify this problem and correct it, in most cases. Exercise intolerance is not noticeable in our Village Felines!! Unless you move the food bowl a few feet further than normal. I expect that they will not eat until you return the bowl to the “proper place”!!  Give your friends a hug for me!
