LUCKY JACK'S MEDICAL RECORDS OF HIS PROGRESS

The report from LSU vet med shows that the arrowhead was successfully removed from Lucky Jack. The area where the object was imbedded was cultured and determined to be “Proteus”, a bacteria that sometimes results from this type of injury.  The sensitivity list shows Augmentin, known in veterinary medicine as Clavamox, and should effectively treat the infection. We started Jack on that this antibiotic, after the report was received. He will also take a beneficial bacteria supplement to help prevent a bacterial problem from the antibiotics. He is also taking a neutriceutical from VetriScience that is in a soft chew form. Lucky Jack is very happy now and his incision is healing nicely.   ~ Dr. Bob

LSU Veterinary Surgeon Removes Arrow from Dog’s Head

BATON ROUGE—On February 7, surgeons at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine removed an arrowhead from the head of “Lucky Jack,” a mixed breed dog.  In September 2007, near Jessieville, Ark., Lucky Jack was shot with a steel tip arrow, possibly by a hunter.  Due to financial reasons, his owners released him to Dr. Bob Zepecki, owner of the All Pet Center in Hot Springs Village, Ark.  Dr. Zepecki raised the funds to send Lucky Jack to LSU to have the surgery to remove the arrowhead.

Lucky Jack first came to LSU to be evaluated in November.  After an examination, the surgical team determined that Lucky Jack needed to be treated for heartworms and ehrlichia canis disease (an infection transmitted by the brown dog tick) before he would be strong enough to have surgery.  He returned to Arkansas for treatment and came back to LSU for surgery on February 6.

Radiographs were taken of the Lucky Jack’s head to determine if the arrowhead had moved since he was last examined.  He was then prepped for surgery, which lasted approximately one hour and was conducted by Dr. Giselle Hosgood, professor of veterinary surgery.  The arrowhead was successfully removed, and radiographs were taken after surgery to ensure that no metal remained in his head.  Lucky Jack will remain in LSU’s Small Animal Intensive Care Unit, where he will be evaluated for twenty-four hours.  He is scheduled to leave the LSU veterinary school at _____ a.m./p.m. on February _____.
