Tick Diseases in the Dog:

Ehrlichia Canis, Borelliosis, Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is probably more familiar to most dog owners.

See LYME DISEASE for more information.

Ehrlichia disease and Borelliosis is spread by tick bites. In dogs, these diseases causes fever, swollen lymph nodes, or simply anemia. These diseases are usually detected in a blood screen with a test that most veterinarians use. Verification can be done by a blood sample sent to a laboratory.

The anemia and fever caused by this organism can be confused easily with other diseases. So the test is the way to detect the  organism.  Treatment is  usually with Doxycycline, an oral antibiotic.  Prevention is simply using a tick treatment applied to your dog each month.
